Design Principles and Applications of Dry-Type Transformers

Jul 29, 2025 Leave a message

As a crucial electrical device in power systems, dry-type transformers integrate multidisciplinary knowledge, including electromagnetics, thermodynamics, and materials science, in their design principles. These transformers use air as a cooling medium, eliminating the need for insulating oil, as oil-immersed transformers rely on. This offers significant advantages in fire resistance, environmental friendliness, and ease of maintenance.

The core design of dry-type transformers revolves around the core and windings. The core is typically constructed from laminated high-permeability silicon steel sheets. By optimizing the lamination structure and minimizing the number of joints, eddy current and hysteresis losses are effectively reduced, thereby improving energy efficiency. The windings are typically wound with copper or aluminum conductors. Depending on the voltage level and capacity requirements, they are designed in a layered or pancake-like structure and encapsulated with epoxy resin or other insulating materials to ensure electrical insulation and mechanical strength.

In terms of insulation system design, dry-type transformers utilize a combination of air and solid insulation materials. Precisely calculated creepage distances and clearances, combined with high-insulation epoxy resin or other composite materials, ensure safe and stable operation at rated voltage. At the same time, a reasonable heat dissipation design dissipates heat generated during operation through natural convection or forced air cooling, maintaining the equipment operating within the permissible temperature range.

The design of dry-type transformers also needs to consider environmental adaptability, including resistance to temperature and humidity fluctuations, corrosion resistance, and seismic performance, to meet the application requirements of different regions and climate conditions. Technological advances, including the use of low-loss materials and intelligent monitoring technologies, have further improved the reliability and operating efficiency of dry-type transformers, making them an indispensable key component in modern power systems.
