What is the difference between LV and HV switchgear?

In a power system, switchgear plays the role of a "central commander," responsible for controlling, protecting, and distributing electrical energy. The incoming power line first enters the main switch inside the cabinet, and then goes to the branch switches, where each circuit is configured according to its needs. Based on different voltage levels, switchgear is mainly divided into Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV). So what is the difference between them?

The fundamental difference: voltage level. LV switchgear is generally used for systems up to 1000V (commonly 380V / 400V), while HV switchgear is used for above 1kV (commonly 10kV, 35kV, etc.)

Different application scenarios. LV switchgear is used in factory workshops, shopping malls, office buildings, and residential distribution systems. HV switchgear is used in substations, urban power grids, and factory incoming lines.

Different structures. LV switchgearhas a relatively simple structure, mainly using air insulation, and commonly uses molded case circuit breakers and air circuit breakers. HV switchgear has a more complex structure, commonly using vacuum circuit breakers and SF6 gas insulation, with much higher requirements for insulation and safety.

Different protection systems. LV switchgear mainly relies on circuit breaker protection, with relatively simple functions and on-site operation. High voltage switchgear is equipped with a complete relay protection system, capable of detecting complex faults such as short circuits, grounding, and overcurrent. It is more automated and can be remotely controlled.

We can also distinguish them based on their features:
Switchgear is generally equipped with a nameplate, which is installed on the upper left or upper right of the cabinet. The nameplate clearly indicates the switchgear's name, model, rated current, rated voltage, and other information.

There are also differences in appearance. Due to safety considerations, HV switchgear cabinets are generally wider and thicker than low voltage ones. In addition, HV switchgear includes a grounding switch, while LV switchgear does not.

HV switchgear must be equipped with a "five-prevention" interlocking system, while this is not mandatory for LV switchgear.

Although they differ in voltage level, structure, and function, it is this division of roles that ensures a stable and reliable power supply system in modern society.
