High-Voltage Switchgear Technology Upgrade: Intelligence Is The Future

With the advancement of power grid digitalization, traditional switchgear is gradually transforming into intelligent switchgear.

In a 110kV substation project I participated in, conventional switchgear was upgraded to an intelligent switchgear with integrated partial discharge monitoring, online temperature monitoring, and mechanical property monitoring. Fiber optic sensors collect real-time partial discharge levels (with a threshold set at 500pC) and contact temperature (with an accuracy of ±1°C) within the switchgear. Data trends are analyzed in conjunction with a backend system to proactively identify potential faults. For example, if the partial discharge level in a certain bay gradually increased from 300pC to 800pC, we could schedule a power outage for maintenance and avoid a sudden insulation breakdown.

In addition, the use of intelligent inspection robots has significantly improved efficiency. Equipped with infrared cameras and visible light sensors, the robots can replace manual inspections at night and in inclement weather, automatically generating reports and reducing the risk of missed inspections.

There are no shortcuts to high-voltage switchgear operation and maintenance; the key lies in a rigorous approach, solid technology, and continuous improvement. Whether it's maintaining composure when handling sudden failures, meticulous attention to detail in routine maintenance, or an open mindset towards embracing intelligent technology, these are all key to ensuring grid security.
